Dogs With Broken Legs
One of the most common racing injuries that will usually end the career of a racer is the broken hock. Usually the right back leg is the most vulnerable due to the stress on the first turn.
This past year, 2007, we were able to help more dogs with injuries of this magnitude. They are definitely more expensive to repair and they also need a minimum of eight weeks in a foster home to recover. There are trips to the vet for bandage changes which also requires more time from our volunteers. However, every dog we took was definitely worth the wait.
A special thanks goes to University Animal Hospital for evaluating and recommending either surgery or a cast and providing the follow-up care. Other organizations assisted us financially so these dogs could get the recommended care. I would like to thank the following organizations:
- GPA National
- GPA Springfield, Missouri
- Petco Foundation
- Blue Ridge Greyhound Adoptions
- GreytLegs Grant
- Greyhound Protection League
